Inside Play Lifts Rams Back Over .500 Mark
By Bruce Rolfe
The Galesburg-Augusta varsity boys basketball team enjoyed strong shooting from the floor that was sparked by a big night inside in a 65-54 win over Gobles at G-A High School Thursday.
G-A, now 3-2, shot 64 percent (25-39) from the floor, with the majority of the points coming from inside.
Gobles pulled out to a 14-13 lead after one quarter, but the Rams, behind six points down low by Austyn Dunn and strong rebounding, moved in front 31-27 at halftime.
G-A was able to gain some separation in the third quarter by pounding the ball inside to Dunn or enjoying penetration through the lane by Trevor Patterson that helped the team to a 45-38 lead. However Gobles closed the quarter by hitting a basket with 10.7 seconds left for a 45-40 advantage after three quarters.
Gobles took its final lead of the game at the 6:05 mark of the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws for a 46-45 advantage, but the Rams closed out the win with a strong effort down the stretch.
Patterson had 20 points to go along with seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, Dunn had 19 points and Abner Snyder contributed nine points.
G-A will be idle until January 5 at home against Kalamazoo Christian.

Galesburg-Augusta seniors Madelyne Standley and Anna DeLeon scored all 12 of the Rams’ points in overtime, helping G-A to a 53-49 win over Kalamazoo Christian Tuesday on the road.

Natalie Hosmer, who dropped in a trio of three-point baskets, added 11 points.
G-A got off to a slow start, falling behind by a 12-2 count after one quarter, but rebounded to pull to within 21-20 at halftime.
The Rams led by a 32-30 margin after three quarters.

G-A Tennis Team Falls To Kalamazoo Hackett, 8-0
The G-A Girls Tennis Team was defeated by highly regarded Kalamazoo Hackett squad on Thursday by an 8-0 score. Solid matches, though in defeat, were turned in by the Rams' Doubles' teams of Nat Hosmer/Kylie Klomparens and Ali Sanderson/Maddy Perry. The closest result in the team match was submitted by a feisty Kristin Gibson who fell by a 3-6,3-6 score.
“We knew what we were up against going into the match but we stayed mostly positive throughout. This match was about winning games, as compared to matches, and we put up some good fights at most of the flights. Kalamazoo Hackett is almost certainly the regular season Conference Champion (as they only have to defeat a winless Eau Claire team next week) while we are looking to secure a fourth place finish in Conference action by defeating Coloma next Tuesday. Coloma will (most likely) be looking to secure a tie for 4th place with us by pulling off the minor upset,” said G-A Coach Paul Ferguson. “Hackett appears to be trying to stay under the radar, statewide, and are most likely not reporting their scores for rankings. They look like a top 5 team in the States to me and are, in my opinion, the favorite to win our Regionals. “
The Rams next participate in the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday, 10am, in Niles/Brandywine. Start time is 10am and the site is Plym Park. The Lady Rams then face Coloma next Tuesday (AWAY) at 4:30pm.
Delton Ends Lady Rams’ Season, 57-43
Delton-Kellogg outscored Galesburg-Augusta 16-2 in the overtime and went on to post a 57-43 win over the Rams in a district semifinal game at Maple Valley Wednesday.
G-A, which completes the season with a 14-7 record, played a solid first half, enjoying a 13-11 lead after one quarter and a 24-15 advantage at halftime.
But the Rams encountered foul trouble in the third and fourth quarters, with Madelyne Standley finally fouling out with about three minutes remaining in the game.
Delton pulled to within 29-28 after three quarters and the two teams were tied at 41-41 at the end of regulation.
Samantha Verburg and Natalie Hosmer each scored 10 points to pace G-A in scoring and Standley, who was held to four points, pulled down eight rebounds.
Lady Rams Hit Bump; 4-Game Winning Streak Stopped By Schoolcraft
Riding a four-game winning streak including a huge win over previously undefeated Kalamazoo Hackett a week ago, the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team hit a bump Friday, dropping a 41-37 decision to Schoolcraft at G-A High School.
A win would have put the 10-5 Rams back in the thick of the SAC Valley Division race, but G-A now falls to 5-3 in the Valley Division.
Schoolcraft improves to 11-4 overall and 7-2 in the SAC Valley Division.
The two teams got off to a slow start, finishing the first quarter tied at 6-6.
G-A’s shooting percentage sagged in the second quarter and Schoolcraft found itself with a number of fast break opportunities.
But it was the Eagles’ three-point shooting that gave the visitors a 17-13 halftime lead, as Schoolcraft knocked down a pair of quick treys midway through the stanza.
The Eagles increased the lead to 30-23 at the end of the third quarter before G-A made a come back in the fourth quarter, only to fall short.
Madelyne Standley enjoyed a strong game, pouring in 22 points to go along with 17 rebounds and three steals.
G-A will be idle until Friday when the team hosts Delton.
G-A Girls Win Huge Game Over Hackett In Overtime
The Galesburg-Augusta girls’ varsity basketball team dug down and handed Kalamazoo Hackett its first loss of the season Friday, 43-39 in overtime.
Hackett entered the game with an 11-0 record, while G-A improves to 9-4 with the win and 5-2 in the division.
G-A’s Sierra Nantz only scored three three points in the game but all three were important, coming in the overtime.
G-A meshed five-of-six free throws and Nantz scored G-A’s only basket from the floor.
G-A trailed by a 19-13 count at halftime, but Natalie Hosmer came to life in the third quarter, knocking down a trio of three-point baskets on the way to scoring 15 points in the second half, helping the Rams to a 26-31 lead after three quarters.
The two teams were tied 36-36 at the end of regulation.
Hosmer finished with 15 points, and Madelyne Standley added 12 points and nine rebounds.
G-A will host Kalamazoo Christian Tuesday.
Lady Rams Use Strong Defense To Claim 46-19 Win Over Bloomingdale
By Bruce Rolfe
Although it was a sloppy game that was dominated by turnovers, fouls and free throws, the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team was none the less happy to come away with a 46-19 win over Bloomingdale Tuesday at G-A High School.
The two teams combined for 28 fouls (G-A had 13) and 40 free throw attempts (G-A was 14-28).
G-A, now 8-4 overall and 3-3 in the Valley Division of the SAC, played a strong game defensively, holding Bloomingdale to single digits the first three quarters. The Rams led 14-3 after one quarter and really turned it on in the second frame when the visitors were held to just two free throws for a 33-5 halftime deficit.
A basket by Bloomingdale’s Heather Davis with 54 seconds left in the first quarter was the only basket from the floor the Cardinals enjoyed in the first half.
G-A entered the final frame with a 39-9 advantage.
Anna DeLeon scored 10 points, Alyssa Woodard added nine and Sierra Nantz and Madelyne Standley each scored eight points.
G-A will host Hackett Friday.
Nice Bounce Back Win For G-A Girls
By Bruce Rolfe
After absorbing a 58-16 loss at Olivet Tuesday, the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team bounced back nicely Friday with a 54-29 win over Martin at G-A High School.
The 7-4 Rams were missing their leading three-point shooter, Natalie Hosmer, but freshman Samantha Verburg stepped up nicely in her absence from long range, knocking down a trio of three-point baskets on the way to a team leading 20 points.
G-A’s quickness seemed to bother Martin most of the game, as the Rams got to loose balls quicker, did a good job under the boards and came up with numerous steals that led to fast break opportunities.
G-A led 15-9 after one quarter, but opened up a 30-16 lead at halftime.
The Rams held Martin without a basket from the floor in the third frame and just four free throws, moving in front 44-20 after three quarters.
Alyssa Woodard added 10 points for the winners and Anna DeLeon scored eight points and pulled down four rebounds.
G-A will host Bloomingdale Tuesday.
Rams Too Much For Lawton, 58-39
Strong defense in the first half accompanied by a solid night at the offensive end added up to a lopsided 58-39 win for the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team over Lawton Friday at G-A High School.
Natalie Hosmer was the catalyst for G-A offensively, scoring a career high 23 points behind seven three-point baskets, also a career high.
G-A led by an 18-11 count after one quarter, but stepped up its defensive intensity in the second quarter when the team allowed just four points for a 33-15 halftime cushion.
The 6-3 Rams entered the fourth quarter with a 48-27 lead.
Madelyne Standley added 17 points, six steals and 12 rebounds.
G-A will play at Olivet Tuesday.
Rams Use Strong Defense To Clip Constantine, 37-15
By Bruce Rolfe
With the prime focus of getting a 56-35 setback to Gobles last Friday out of their mind and back on track as quickly as possible, the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team responded with a strong defensive effort by posting a 37-15 win over Constantine Wednesday at G-A High School in a makeup game that was postponed Tuesday.
The Rams, now 5-3, concentrated on getting their hands in the passing lanes to deflect passes and turned up the defensive pressure for the better part of three quarters, leading to the lop-sided win.
G-A held Constantine to single digits all four quarters, racing out to a 12-4 lead ager one quarter and 18-6 at halftime when Sierra Nantz split a free throw with 1:31 left in the second quarter.
G-A held the visitors without a point in the second half until the 6:21 mark when the Falcons were finally able to connect, but G-A’s lead was well into double figures at 24-8.
The Rams closed the quarter with a 5-1 run for a 29-9 lead after three quarters.
G-A enjoyed its biggest lead of the game at 25 points when Samantha Brooks scored with 1:28 left in the game for a 37-12 Ram advantage.
Hosmer finished with 11 points to lead G-A in scoring and MAdelyne Standley pitched in with eight points to go along with eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Gobles Remains Undefeated At Expense Of G-A Girls
Too many weapons for Gobles combined with a high number of turnovers added up to a 56-35 loss by the Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team Friday at G-A High School.
Gobles, now 8-0, enjoyed three players in double figure scoring, led by Ellen Doyle’s 18 points. Molee Nason added 16 points and Hailey Baxter contributed 10 points.
Gobles led by a 10-6 count after one quarter but enjoyed a double digit lead at halftime 31-21.
G-A’s attempts to get back into the game were stalled by turnovers, as the Rams turned the ball over five times in the stanza.
The Rams also struggled to get into a groove at the offensive end, while Gobles continued to build its lead, settling for a 45-27 advantage after three quarters.
G-A, now 4-3, was led by Natalie Hosmer’s 13 points, while Madelyne Standley scored 12 points, including eight in the second half.
The Rams will host Constantine Jan. 12.
Dreams Of Regional Championship End For Lady Rams
4th Quarter Comeback Bid In Regional Title Game Falls Short For G-A, 60-43
By Bruce Rolfe
Dreams of returning to the Class C quarterfinals for the first time since 2009 at Galesburg-Augusta were crushed Thursday by Homer in the Regional championship game at Concord, 60-43.
G-A completes the season with an impressive 17-7 record, while Homer takes a 21-4 mark into Tuesday’s quarterfinals against Ypsilanti Arbor Prep (21-3).
Homer’s defense on G-A’s Kathryn Dooley (3 points) and outside threat Natalie Hosmer (2 points) took away two of the Rams’ big offensive threats, but turnovers reduced G-A’s number of offensive threats in the first half in particular, when the team had 13 miscues. G-A finished with 22 turnovers for the game.
The Rams nearly pulled off a remarkable come back, but the G-A could not over come foul trouble, and Homer capitalized at the free throw down the stretch.
G-A trailed by as much as 24 points with 2:54 left in the third quarter, but the Rams had their fans on their feet late in the fourth stanza with an impressive comeback.
Trailing 45-27 at the end of three quarters, G-A’s press helped the Rams whittle the deficit down to as little as seven points with 2:34 left in the game.
Three-point bombs by Anna DeLeon and Holly DeLeon around a basket by Madison Harlow gave G-A hope with a 50-43 deficit, but the lead was too much to overcome with the clock their enemy and Homer extending the lead at the free throw line.
The Trojans went 6-for-10 at the charity stripe over the final 2:14. Homer’s Alyssa Boyd split a free throws with 2:14 left for a 51-43 Trojan lead, but the Trojans were able to pick off the rebound off her second free throw miss and not only ran valuable seconds off the clock, but split another pair of free throws.
Two G-A misses sandwiched around a pair of free throws by Courtney Willson put the Trojans’ lead back into double digits (53-43) with 1:58 left.
Megan George split a pair of free throws to bump the lead to 55-43 with 1:48 left, but G-A turned the ball over with 1:38 left in the game.
Another free throw by Bailey Manis with 1:25 left put the Trojan lead at 56-43 and the Rams did not have enough time to complete the come back.
Holly DeLeon gave G-A a quick 2-0 lead with a basket down low at the 7:27 mark of the opening frame, but that would be the only lead the Rams would enjoy.
Homer forced six turnovers to march out to a 13-7 lead after one quarter, and the Rams had seven more miscues in the second quarter and found themselves trailing 31-17 at halftime.
Homer’s interior defense frustrated G-A’s Leah Savage and Madelyne Standley inside the paint or down low often, however Savage did score from in close to the basket with 36.1 seconds left to pull the Rams to within 45-27 at the end of three quarters.
Standley finished with 18 points and eight rebounds to lead G-A.
Boyd’s 20 points led Homer.
G-A Gets Rematch With Springport In District Championship Game
The Galesburg-Augusta girls’ basketball team will be looking for some revenge in Friday’s 7 p.m. district championship game against Springport after the Rams clipped Dansville 38-29 Wednesday in the district semifinal game at Springport.
Springport (9-13), who defeated Maple Valley Wednesday, bounced G-A out of the last year’s district tournament semifinal game, 52-42.
G-A (15-6) enjoyed a 23-3 halftime lead, but injuries to starters Kathryn Dooley and Holly DeLeon, stalled the momentum and Dansville (5-16) crept back into the game. It is not known what the two starters’ status is for Friday’s district championship game.
Natalie Hosmer scored 12 points for G-A and Madelyn Standley added nine points.
G-A Hangs On For 27-23 Win In Double Overtime
Both Parchment and Galesburg-Augusta failed to score a point in the first overtime, but it was G-A?s defense in the second extra session that proved to be a key in the Rams? 27-23 win Friday.
The two teams entered the first overtime knotted at 23-23, but neither team scored in the first overtime.
G-A then held the Panthers scoreless in the second overtime and Leah Savage and Kathryn Dooley each scored baskets to lift the Rams to the win.
G-A, now 9-3 overall and 7-0 in the league, was led by Dooley?s 13 points.
Parchment led by an 11-7 count after one quarter, G-A came back to take a 17-13 lead at halftime and the Panthers crept to within 18-15 at the end of three quarters.
G-A will play at Schoolcraft Tuesday.
G-A’s Inside Presence, Defense Too Much For Delton
Struggling offensively most of the year, the Galesburg-Augusta girls’ varsity basketball team made a concerted effort to try and establish an inside game Friday against Delton and the strategy worked, helping the team to a 39-22 win. galesburg-augusta-sports.php
The Rams, now 7-3 overall, played their typical strong brand of strong defense as well, helping the team to a double digit lead most of the game.
G-A enjoyed quarter leads of 11-2, 19-7 and 29-12.
Holly DeLeon led the winners with nine points, Kathryn Dooley chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds, two blocks and one steal and Leah Savage and Natalie Hosmer each had seven points.
G-A will host Kalamazoo Christian Tuesday.

The Galesburg-Augusta girls varsity basketball team will enter a key SAC Valley Division contest at Kalamazoo Hackett Saturday with plenty of momentum after claiming a 56-23 win over Bloomingdale on the road Tuesday.

G-A will have a key SAC Valley Division showdown at Hackett Saturday at 6 p.m. The Rams, 6-0 in the Valley Division and 9-0 in the SAC, enjoy a two-game lead over the Irish in the Valley Division and a win would give G-A some separation. Schoolcraft trails the Rams by one game in the Valley Division.
G-A used strong defense Tuesday, holding Bloomingdale to single digits in three quarters.
The Rams led by a 9-2 count after one quarter, 21-12 at halftime and 38-17 at the end of three quarters.
Madelyne Standley led G-A with 17 points and six rebounds, Natalie Hosmer, who connected on a trio of three-point baskets, added nine points and Madison Harlow chipped in with eight points.

He duplicated that fete his senior year again winning all three titles and lowering his school record to 49.1 seconds. That record still stands today.

The ’53 tennis team won the third straight KVA league and tournament titles. The Rams had now won 38 straight league matches without a loss.
In the Regionals the Rams used their strength in doubles competition to win the team title. Jim Beadle and Dave Noud defeated teammates Marv Richardson and Ponch Rutherford in the finals in a three set marathon.
Both doubles teams made it to the semi-finals of the State Tournament where they lost. As a result the team finished as the runner-up to Grand Rapids Lee. (Editor's note: Above information provided by Dale Martin).

In the KVA the Rams claimed their 13th straight League and tournament championship. In the finals it was all G-A. Mike Pierman beat Fred Mills in the singles final and Jack Campbell and Dave Wilson beat Dan Austin and Jim Maxson to win the doubles competition. The Rams piled up 18 points to runner-up Parchment’s 6.
In the Class C Regionals G-A was tied with St. Augustine with the doubles finals deciding the championship. Austin and Maxson lost to Kibby and McGuire in a three set match, 6-2, 3-6 and 10-8. The Rams, defending State champions, would have only one doubles team going into state competition.
In the State Tournament both East Jordan and St. Augustine would have two singles and two doubles teams. Add in a strong Grosse Pointe team and the Rams seemed to have little chance of repeating as champion. As the competition unfolded, the other schools took turns upsetting one another. Meanwhile, Austin and Maxson took the opportunity presented them. Playing their best tennis of the season, they rolled to easy wins in their first two rounds of play. In the finals they met Portenga and Wright of Grosse Pointe with the winner claiming the championship. They lost the first set 5-7 and won the second set 6-1. In the final set they outlasted their opponent 10-8 to give G-A its second straight State Class “C-D” title. (Note: Above information provided by Dale Martin)
